Five Steps to Making Your Conscience Your Ally
By Delbert Baker
Your conscience is more than just an inner voice – it’s a God-given compass designed to help you navigate life’s important choices and decisions. The Apostle Paul argues that one of life’s top priorities is to maintain a good conscience (1 Timothy 1:5).
Here are five steps to making conscience your ally versus your antagonist.
Step One: Recognize It!
Conscience is that inner prompting that urges you to choose what is right and cautions you against what is wrong. It is developed through an internal regulatory mechanism comprised of genetic factors, early life experiences, and internal moral principles integrated in the heart of every person (Romans 2:14-15). When we ignore or violate it, we feel guilt and shame – signals that we need to correct our course.
Step Two: Protect It!
A well-maintained conscience gives you satisfaction and keeps you in harmony with God’s will. It convicts you when repentance is needed and brings peace when you’ve acted in alignment with God’s standards. However, if ignored or overridden repeatedly, the conscience becomes desensitized or seared, allowing moral compromises to creep in unnoticed (Hebrew 10:22).
Step Three: Nurture It!
For your conscience to remain healthy and effective, it must be regularly calibrated. Pray and immerse yourself in God’s Word, which sharpens your moral discernment and aligns your values with His. Confess and be quick to turn away from sin whenever your conscience convicts you and seek accountability through relationships that encourage spiritual growth (Acts 24:16).
Step Four: Affirm It!
A healthy conscience is your greatest ally in walking with God. It helps you make decisions based on integrity, experience deeper peace, and grow spiritually by staying aligned with divine truth. Neglecting your conscience, however, can lead to a hardened heart and spiritual blindness. Therefore, regularly affirming and listening to your conscience is essential to keeping it an ally, not an adversary (1 John 3:20-21).
Step Five: Check and Recheck It!
Use this self-quiz to assess the health of your conscience and to discern ways to strengthen it:
- Do you consistently feel convicted when you recognize wrongdoing in your life?
- Are you quick to seek forgiveness and make changes when your conscience alerts you?
- Do you immerse yourself in the Bible and prayer to stay aligned with godly principles?
- Do you seek godly counsel and accountability to maintain a responsive conscience?
- Do you prioritize what is moral and right over what is convenient or popular?
- By regularly being able to answer “yes!” to the above questions, you can ensure your conscience remains a reliable and powerful ally, guiding you toward a life that honors God.
