“Take the Stairs”
L dropcap
ast year my middle school Bible class relished discussing the story of Creation and the Fall. Illustrating God’s response to sin, they worked on visually interpreting a once-beautiful world now marred by brokenness. One illustration was created by a fifth grader with a deep love for color and texture in art. His digital piece was stunning, but his explanation was unforgettable.

His canvas was split into two halves: the left side, a deep, consuming black, depicting symbols of sin and suffering: bottles of alcohol, people overcome by anger and fear, scenes of violence, distress, and confusion.

The right side, in stark contrast, a radiant, brilliant white, a place of pure joy. Light beamed from every corner. Angels filled the space with laughter. Connecting these two sides was a long staircase, uneven in its steps with varying levels of height and depth, stretching from darkness into light and at the center stood a glorious throne, radiating beauty and majesty.

Captivating was the movement in the center. A young boy—his shoulders heavy, his expression burdened—was climbing the stairs, each step transforming his posture. But with each step his countenance changes from sadness to hope. Simultaneously, coming down from the right side, meeting him on the steps, was a man. His eyes filled with compassion. With love, His arms outstretched and hands reached out. This man was Jesus! God deeply loved us so He gave us Jesus to save us.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16, NIV.

The room fell silent. Then he said, “This is salvation!”

  • God, not waiting for lost humanity to reach Him, came down from glory to meet us, to rescue us from darkness, Colossians 1:12-14.
  • The Savior brought us from darkness into His marvelous light, guiding us home, 1 Peter 2:9.
  • Salvation isn’t about earning our way to heaven. It’s about responding to the One who has already made a way, Galatians 2:16
  • God has rescued through His Son, Jesus the Christ. “God rescued us from dead-end alleys and dark dungeons. He’s set us up in the kingdom of the Son he loves so much, the Son who got us out of the pit we were in, got rid of the sins we were doomed to keep repeating” Colossians 1:13 (MSG).
My student closed with a simple yet profound truth:

“There is hope for humanity — we just have to take the stairs.”

stone steps with flowers surrounding each side
There is hope for humanity – we just have to take the stairs.
This only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him”
(John 3:16-17, ESV).
