Assess your understanding of purpose and destiny by answering the following questions (1 = Agree; 3 = Disagree). The following Understanding Key corresponds to the Self-Inventory Questions.
1. Can you define what life purpose and destiny are?
2. Do you desire to live a life of purpose?
3. Is it essential to realize your life purpose?
4. Can you outline steps to discover life’s purpose?
Eagerly Search-out Purpose: To be on the right path our choices should lead us to cooperate with God by: 1) believing He has a plan for us on earth and in heaven; 2) knowing, when we cooperate with God, His plan for us will be realized; 3) diligently praying, studying spiritual and general materials for insight; 4) searching for providential direction, indications and signals; and 5) believing we will find our purpose (see Jeremiah 29:11-13, NIV).
Facts Validate Benefits: Though many people may not realize their purpose, it is possible to discover it. Research bears out that pursuing purpose and destiny gives direction, adds fulfillment to life, and prepares us for eternal life. Further, people living in purpose are healthier, are mentally and emotionally resilient, and live longer.
Internal and External: Pastor-writer Frederick Buechner highlights steps to discover life purpose. “The kind of work God usually calls you to is the kind of work (a) that you need most to do and (b) that the world most needs to have done… The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”
As you engage in the search for purpose and destiny, write out your impressions. Then share with God and a friend. You’ll be amazed at the focus, fulfillment, and happiness that will materialize. Live in purpose!
